It’s no secret that Anthony and I watch Shokugeki no Soma. No, we’re not pervs. We enjoy the cooking and humor aspect of it. Last month, they aired the episode where he was doing a steak battle with Ikumi. He made the Chaliapin Steak Don.
Trivia: Chaliapin-style is a method reputedly invented by the Japanese to please Feodor Chaliapin, the Russian opera singer.
Tonight, I decided I would try and recreate the dish because I was craving steak. I usually just season my steaks with salt, pepper, garlic and herbs but decided to try something new. I did and guess what? IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST STEAK RECIPES I EVER MADE!! Even Anthony said it was really tasty, even though I bought a cheap cut of meat.
TIPS & TRICKS:
For this dish, I basically followed the instructions I found that was scanned from the manga with a few tweaks. The recipe calls for Plum paste but we didn’t have any so I just used regular rice. Also, I added a small beef cube to the red wine while reducing the alcohol content. I put some of the onions for taste but not all for garnish.
I hope you enjoy trying out this dish too!
